What decides the price
- Soil. The single biggest variable. Well-draining soil supports a simple gravity field; slow-draining or shallow soil forces a larger field or an engineered system.
- Bedrooms. Systems are sized by bedroom count.
- Lot access and terrain. Flat and open is cheap; wooded hillside means slower machine work and sometimes a pump chamber.
- Permit and inspections. County fees are modest; the contractor's design and inspection coordination are part of the quote.

New systems in Volusia split three ways. Inside the Indian River Lagoon Protection Program area in the southeast, every new system has had to be nitrogen-reducing since January 1, 2024, on any lot size — the one-acre threshold used elsewhere in Florida does not apply there. Inside the springs basin areas on the west side, a new conventional system is prohibited on a lot of an acre or less where central sewer is available, and where sewer is not available a lot of an acre or less must take a system achieving at least 65 percent nitrogen reduction. Above an acre inside those basins, and outside both areas entirely, a conventional system remains an option where the site evaluation supports one. Approved routes to the nitrogen standard are in-ground nitrogen-reducing biofilters, Florida-approved NSF 245 aerobic treatment units, and approved performance-based systems. Permitting is through the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, Environmental Health.
